Fit and Fabulous at Fifty (and beyond)!

By: Gene Ivins

Hello everyone and welcome to youshine.org.  While anyone who wants to be fit, look and feel fabulous may want to read this, I am targeting fifty something's.  At fifty-one years young I am benefitting from a lifelong love for the fitness lifestyle.  Also,  I would like to encourage our readers to do the same.  Along with offering encouragement and advice, I am looking forward to  recieving encouragement and advice from you!  A little about me- I am one of those crazy people who actually enjoy excerise!  I know some of you may not share that same feeling but we may be able to improve that by changing how we view excercise.

First I guess I may as well admit I am too vain to give Father time along with gravity, without putting up my best fight.  Nothing beats a healthy lifestyle combined with fitness when it comes to achieving that lean athletic/youthful  look that everyone wants (whether they admit it or not).  Next we can look at the facts- anyone approaching the mid century mark has to address whether they want to or not, studies show that you lose five to seven pounds of muscle mass every decade after the age of forty (starts in thirties for women).  This results in the frail, flabby, look of most mid-aged americans are rocking these days. The really sad news is that as we age it only gets worse, then couple that with disease and you have a very poor quality of life (too sad grandkids, sorry).  Think about that.  Pretty hard to imagine feeling fabulous, much less fit when dealing with that sad reality, isn't it?  None of that for us!  Installing a sensible progressive resistance training program can not only stave off that muscle mass loss but have you looking and feeling better than ever (I have the picture to prove it).  Yes, I could go on indifinitely but will stop here for now with the "why," and get to the "how."

After getting cleared by your physician for your desired level f fitness , you will want too access your level of physical fitness.  Have you worked out with either weights or some form of cardio fitness in the last six months (ok...the last six years ??) My guess is that most people will say- "out of shape".  So let's start out first by simply moving our bodies, perferably by doing something you enjoy- walking, bicycling, sprinting while walking the dog, dancing in the rain.  It really doesn't matter, just move your body.  It' is amazing how good this feels once we get started, our bodies were designed for movement.  This will not only improve your fitness level but you will feel great and be ready to move into the next phase of your new fit and fabulous lifestyle.  We will get into that more in my next article.

Honestly, folks, be it working out, kayaking, fishing, golfing, or giving my Grandchildren Horsey rides , I am always aware and very grateful for my health.  Even though I started many years ago and I actually LIKE my active lifestyle, it is never too late to get started.  Also, it is never to late to enjoy the benefits of living a heathier lifestyle.  It is my sincere wish that you will join me in the coming months as we discover how awesome it is feeling fit and fabulous at fifty !! Woohoo !!  I say the heck with forty, let's make fifty the new thirty!  Feel free to write us and share your thoughts, attitude, and personal progress/success story.

God bless, Let your light shine on someone today !!
